This is from Alasdair Gold’s latest video, which before you ask, I did not watch, Reach PLC’s man inside Hotspur Way made a few points that are worth pulling at, like the warm bread.
“I think Skippy has been used quite sparingly and when he has played, has played in the wrong position.
“I still don’t understand why he’s playing Bissouma as an anchorman and Skippy is almost like an attacking winger at times.
“Surely swap them around and have Bissouma as the box-to-box midfielder and Skippy holding, as he was so brilliant at Norwich doing it and in the first season for Spurs after he came back [from loan] as well.”
Skipp has been used sparingly because he has yet to come back fully from his injuries.
It strikes me that Tony is so risk-averse that isn’t drilling anyone to play as an AMF. The problem with Gold is that he idly reinforced the narrative that Bissouma is a full-blown AMF. At Brighton, a cursory glance shows that he was in ascending order, an RCM. LCM and primarily a DMF.
Yes, Yves has a clear propensity for attacking play, but until he can change Conte’s mind, the number one pick in that spot looks to be Bentancur. Rodrigo has proved he can score Premier League goals too, so Bissouma has his work cut out.
Instead of trying to reinvent himself, he might be better off focusing on reviving the role that worked for him at Brighton.
