Two cracking goals for Spurs u21s tonight. Funny it was two players that weren’t given the time of day yesterday while ‘more experienced’ and ‘better’ players put us to sleep yesterday.

I've just watched the U-21s in action against Div 1 Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy: literally our boys v seasoned professional men. It was 3-3 with an extra point for a penalty shoot-out which we won 6-5. Mikey Moore, 17 just 10 days ago, was outstanding.

1) A mazy run into the box takes three defenders to stop him, but he flicks the ball to Lankshear who hammers it into the net.

2) Moore bursts into the box from the left wing and scores with a fierce shot from the tightest of angles

3) Moore collects the ball in midfield and instantly releases Ajayi with a lovely Kane-esque through ball to score

4) Moore is felled from behind at the edge of the box after another mazy run. The defender gets a yellow which could have been a red

5) Moore scores the first of Spurs' six penalties.

What a prospect!

Incidentally, SpursPlay is great value at £45 a year and this game's commentary was excellent.

Like the first team. They’ve conceded 2 so far. Currently 2-3

I disagree. He’s a great footballer and was a snip at 45M - He was fantastic at Leicester and is hardly someone past his prime. He can only do so much and it’s for the team around him to see his vision and anticipate getting on the end of it. Can you imagine if he was playing alongside Kane? I honestly don’t get the hate for him.

Newcastle. Arsenal. United. Brighton we are going to get EL Zippo from. If we’re lucky we may beat Everton & Brentford at home. We are in big trouble with this flimsy squad and one trick pony of a manager. When the trigger is pulled AGAIN what’s out there to improve us? We are heading for the wilderness with tumbleweed for company. In the name of God Levy. Sell up and Fuck off!

A salient point of who would we get next? It'll give Levy another 18 months grace when it happens and it deflects the onous off him. Ange has had daggers since being given the job. Levy will be loving it.

It isn't hate I have for Maddison, that is saved for Richarlison and the likes of Ndom, Sissoko, Royal, Bergwijn, Sessegnon who were sham footballers that Levy spaffed £200m on! I want more from Maddison, but when we've been starved of good footballers maybe that's unfair. I just think he could be the real deal, but if he was, we wouldn't have been able to sign him.

Gives Levy another 18 months. Dear God how many times are we going to go through this cycle? 2 years ago I was total anti Potter. Now I’d have him in a heart beat. Who else is there? The loose cannon Tuchel but what I fear the most is the ominous shadow of Southgate😳

There are lots of managers who could do the job of getting 8th-4th for Spurs, but until Levy actually builds a football team from the top down and buys players of genuine quality it wont make a difference to our 'plight' (we are hardly struggling are we, like an Oldham or a Swindon?). 4th isn't a trophy but the media has turned it into the Holy Grail ably assisted by Wenger, who proclaimed it the same as a trophy! A manager is only as good as the players he has at his disposal. I believe only Clough and Taylor bucked that trend. Even our very own Bill Nich was backed massively and quelle surprise he won big.

Life under ENIC is the closest we fans will see to purgatory. If we were making money out of it, we wouldn't care so much.

And whilst we have fans saying they’d prefer to get to the Europa semis (why not the final & win it?) and finish in the holy grail spots rather than finish 6/7 & winning The FA Cup Levy will continue to just keep on counting the money as the sheep roll in.

If/when Ange gets the chop we could a lot worse than to promote Wayne Burnett, who has done great things with our academy and U-21s. Liverpool historically did all right promoting from the boot room.

The boy Hall looks ready to step up also.

"Can you imagine if he was playing alongside Kane?"

Fair point. An idea is to move him out as a right winger. He's capable of beating a player and deliver a cross. I don't think many of us would miss Johnson. Naturally Bergvall would play through the middle.

Good point. Bergvall is ready so yes. Go for it. I’d also experiment with putting Dragusin in as LCB and let VDV roam higher up.

He doesn’t get going when the tough stuff kicks in. He hides and falls over a lot and doesn’t finish what he starts

Interesting highlight reel. Madders is a creative player, but at quite a slow pace. He frequently passes, accurately, but then (as highlighted by JG) doesn't move for the return. Hence he is not an ideal creative player for a fast-break offence. He is perhaps more effective at manoeuvring in tight spaces. A player like Eze has greater dribbling ability and is more adept at moving the ball quickly. One could use both types of players, in tandem, with Madders being the deeper lying of the two, but either way, Levy won't stump up the money for Eze, so it's a moot point!

He certainly has talent, but he fizzles out far too easily and regularly. He's a great footballer, in part. When things get tough he hides. When the Leicester goal went in we needed him to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and regain the dominance we had. That lack of leadership is what is stopping him going to the next level and why Southgate left him at home.

Okay… I watched the video. Not gonna lie I’ve skipped the data spread. Why Jim I hear you scream.

I’ll tell you why seeing as you asked nicely.

When I look at that in more detail the thing that stands out to me is Maddison’s lack of movement after he makes his passes. Watch closely at how many times after the pass leaves his foot he just stands there watching it.

He’s only done one part of the job. The second part is to look for a return ball. Possibly getting on the end of a second ball in case of a rebound from a shot. And just as importantly continue his movement to take opposing players away from the receiving player. Stretch the defence, create space.

I might be being harsh but it’s what I’d expect my team mates to be doing or the players I’m managing or coaching.

Pass and move, or as our older members would remember it, push and run.

Spot on.

I think you’re spot on. Though often we lack movement up front and become very static.

He's not exactly direct and often takes a touch or two too many. I wonder if he's been influenced by Lo Celso on the training ground as he's becoming more and more similar. To be fair it's not just him, play is generally too slow and pedestrian, but he's also supposed to be the playmaker. I watched the Palace game and while they lost I think Eze had a good game. Unlike Maddison he always moves with a sense of urgency.

Expand full comment

A sense of urgency, dynamism - those are the features you notice about Lucas Bergvall. Just managed to get the clip to play, and it's true Maddison does not follow his pass. He's like a golfer standing admiring his drive. He can pick a pass, but better teams won't give him the time and space Leicester did.

Bobby Moore said he always knew what he was going to do with the ball if it came his way. The only Spurs player that had that speed of thought last night was Bergvall, who pinged off numerous first time one touch passes and was always moving. The opposite end of the spectrum were Romero (stand, walk, look about then pass backwards because by that time everyone else has stopped running about), Son (always off balance) and Vicario (rising panic as the ball heads towards him).

Expand full comment

Romero is actually a big problem for Spurs, not just because he switches off at vital moments but because he brings the ball slowly out of defence, giving the other team time to reset. VDV and Udogie are much more inclined to move the ball forward quickly, setting off attacks. For all Romero's reputation, I wouldn't be heartbroken to see him go to Madrid for big money, even though he has largely sorted out his disciplinary problems.

He really deserves a start against Everton. Unlikely, but deserved.
