Johnson has proven good in brief patches but by and large has been found wanting when it matters. When he comes charging in at the back post I’d be more inclined to put the proverbial house on him missing the target than scoring.

I do like that Eze is half way between a winger and a ten. I imagine that’s what the manager sees in him.

Lloyd Kelly to Newcastle confirmed. That means Ben Davies is good enough. Levy, you're a fucking idiot

For sanity’s sake, let’s stop pretending Levy gives a fuck about the football team part of Enic FC.

Wasn’t there a suggestion at the end of the season he was to be offered an extension to his contract?Typical Levy, just doesn’t know when to get rid.And of course Tosin is just about to sign for the chavs, another one we were linked with.

I remember Poch reacting to both Davies and Sissoko getting new contracts about year before he left; "this is decision of the club...". He obviously felt he needed to make that known...

It's crazy when you can get a better and younger player for free and offload Davies for anything around 5m back to Swansea or whatever. Since we're in Europe it wouldn't be too hard to convince Kelly to pick Spurs over Newcastle

Good close control, bit of pace, awareness of team-mates, puts the ball into inviting areas but a bit fragile and needs to play in/with a better forward line.

I've been advised by my new source that we've agreed the £60m for Eze and this was made 'easier' by the fact that he, Madder and Ange are all with Base Management Agency.

This presumably means that the fee has been agreed between Spurs And Palace.Nothing about whether Eze has agreed to join us,because that is not a foregone conclusion.Palace finished the season on fire unlike our underwhelming efforts I guess he would need to weigh up how many of that team are likely to be tempted away by bigger clubs.

£60M is a very high price to pay for somebody who is already injury prone, but I do like him.Is he really the main man we are looking for to fill that attacking MF role,it’s just one of the positions that we need to strengthen with quality.

Interesting. Seems a bit steep?

Was just looking at his PL stats against Maddison’s.

Maddison 29 games, 4 goals, 9 assists.

Eze 27 games, 11 goals, 4 assists.

Maybe that is market value for someone with a better than 1 in 3 goals record.

Let Enic spend some money. Who gives a shit!

Expand full comment

It's all about the price. £50m is still a lot of money (for us), only Ndom and Richarlison have cost us more. As a result 5 or 6 out of 10 is not good enough. Utd have spaffed away far more on Anthony and Maguire, possibly include Hoijlund. Arsenal have paid more for Pepe, Liverpool for Nunez. I could go on, especially with Chelsea! Are we expecting too much from the players we sign at lower fees? Not when they miss easy passes, chances, tackles I'm not. There is value out there, other teams wouldn't function if there wasn't, so wouldn't it be nice if we joined in!

If we could afford to blow £50m on 3 players a season, so be it, but we can't or should I state Levy won't invoke a radical new plan involving signing players who are already good. Indeed, if you check out Spurs' top 25 costliest players on TransferMarkt, we haven't had many hits. In fact, it is diabolical recruitment, but we knew that anyhow. As a result, expect more of the same this summer.

I believe a self-honest Brennan would give himself a 5. He rates as a player who can plug in and fill a position, but he rarely was an impact player.

Making a strong impact on the match is what separates the shiny player from the average, and Brennan cannot push himself to consistently make his mark unless he honestly rates himself as currently average and in need of a lot more work.

It’s hard to judge players because o f the many variables in our squad ..If Son could finish BJ would have had more assists ..if Porro or Kulu could cross more accurately he like others may have scored more goals…the squad lacks quality, and the coach was tactically limited last season. Both Maddison and BJ appear lightweight .cant have too many of those on the park.

Maybe because I’m American and we don’t have these ratings after every game in sports I’m always confused by this rating system. Seems someone gets a 5 for just turning up on the pitch and everyone has a different scale. And I think a qualitative analysis is more useful.

Positives: Johnson just turned 23 so he’s still young and can improve. He seems a natural winger, provides width and can play on either wing. I’ve seen him make some decent crosses and some bad ones. Mostly right-footed but not entirely one-footed. Has some pace. I like how he got in Matty Cash’s face after the Cuti debacle but then again they were former teammates and mates. Can finish a tap-in

Negatives: Dribbles with his head down mostly in a straight line. Seems fragile, not sure he can make it through a 50-game season we’re looking at next year. Too many wasted opportunities where he got to the final third and nothing happened it seemed.

Overall: If I have to give it a grade and 5 is not killing us I’d say 6.

We sign players that are just good enough to keep a debate going. That's what's sad. There's rarely agreement across the fanbase as we don't go for that calibre of player.

That is more the truth AW -- everybody loves a punt - when it goes right !!

However we have enough of an income to buy the real deal[s] when they become available . It is a travesty that we are never "in the running" when a Bellingham or Rice or even fucking Mbappe comes to market . It just dont happen - embarassing !!!!!!!!!!

I voted 4 or more which is basically a 5. I'd keep him though as the potential is definitely there. It's mainly Werner and Kulusevski I have an issue with down the flanks. What I'd do to replace them with better wingers.

Love these little highlights packages, Harry.

Johnson has the tools, I’m just not convinced he has the killer in him. Or the savvy for that matter. Would LOVE to be proven wrong.

Players don’t set there value. 45 for him. 45 for Maddison. Both contributed more in a season than the 100M + combo of LC & The Belly have done in 5 years.

As for Johnson. He contributed far more than the headless swede, & actually looks to cross a ball. He’s definitely worth being given another season, before we can fully critique the boy.

Kulusevski is the first player I would sell

Expand full comment

There are several players I would sell before Kulu. Skipp, Gil, Emerson, Davies, Lo Celso, Forster, Whiteman, Scarlett and of course Dumbelly, to name but 9! ... but half of them are homegrown mediocrities, so naturally they will be retained, however undeservedly. It's who we are mate!

Hahahhahah

According to transfermarkt Kulu's market value is €55m which means we'd easily get 40 for him. That's real money you can can spend towards a massive upgrade like Olise or Neto and get it done fast. That's why he'd be the first head rolling if I was in charge. The others will leave for peanuts.

Expand full comment

Yes, there is some sound logic behind that idea BT, albeit you should also be able to pick up some decent money for Lo Celso, Royal, Skipp and Gil. Olise and Neto are both terrific talents, but unfortunately both of them are really injury prone, especially Neto, who's like a walking MASH unit!

Expand full comment

Yeah, I wonder what's up with all the injuries lately. I've got a sneaky feeling Lo Celso is going out on loan again. No more than 10m for Skipp and how much would anyone pay up for Gil? Levy probably thinks he will get his money back. As for Royal I think the only way we can get a decent fee for him is by the Saudi route. Long summer ahead of us..

Your assuming they can be sold .

hahaha ... I would never make that assumption BT, some might have to be given away!

It’s his first season with us. New manager new system. He’s 21 still learning.

I’ve given him a 6 which reflects room for improvement in his second season. The jury’s out. I expect more. Actually I demand more. We all should.

Expand full comment

Yes, 6/10 from me too. The highlights reel package shows glimpses of what he could become, but the current reality is far too many games where he is ineffectual and lacking in consistency. Still, given it was his first season, one should show some patience with the lad and, as you say JG, demand improvement.

I think Johnson is slightly 'tainted' by the money that was paid for him. I believe that to be in the region of £40m , a great deal of money but when you consider the inflated price of the 'home-grown' , is probably the sum you'd pay for most youngsters considered to possess immense potential , when we signed him from Forest he certainly had that .

In my eyes he actually showed , in glimpses , that he is standard required without showing consistency . Right now I wouldn't want to lose him , confidence is key with him , much like Maddison , and Ifeel he could make great strides this year . He is , at very least , a poss game - changer from the bench and maybe still potential to be an out and out striker , he has the first touch of a top-notch striker . Would like him to be given that chance .............
