I find it's very hard to even engage in a conversation on the matter (and not only this one).
There are organisations like BLM whose declared primary purpose is fighting racism, but there is a lot of shady, unsavoury stuff behind them as well; and if you point that out - or the utter meaninglessness of kneeling before games -, "you're racist". Because who can disagree with the fact that black lives matter? I certainly don't.
Ditto pointing out the inherent flaws in multi-sex areas and the like - "you're transphobic". There is a phrase I like from HH - "people can't hold two thoughts in their heads at the same time" - and I think that applies perfectly here.
Does anyone actually think that rainbow laces, armbands, kneeling, or a couple of flags will stop certain people from thinking racist thoughts or from looking askance at any members of the LGBTQ+ community?
When asked about similar things in American football, Bill Burr said something along the lines of "why are they showing this to me? Or anybody - do they think there's a guy slamming his wife's head in the drawer, who sees the ad and goes 'oh, so this is wrong?' "
Education is crucial. Not some cheap gestures that serve our conscience more than actual victims of actual oppression.
Gestures are what matters in the world where your social standing depends on fitting in with the current approved thinking.
And people with high media exposure (HK) will tune their gestures to maximise their compliance, and behave and speak "appropriately.
I am old enough to recognise that prejudices and discrimination against minorities has vastly decreased in my lifetime. Yet the level of activism is aways increasing, suggesting that the activists will never be satisfied. "More must be done" is the frequently-heard cry, and so, more futile, embarrassing, counterproductive theatre is enacted at public events where the captive audience is hectored and very soon becomes bored to death.
Seems the word ‘ Invasion’ is problematic nowadays.
The WC is a farce as is everything that goes with it. Like most things it all comes down to the $ £ € Wallets have been fattened. Homes on the beach purchased.
Take the knee for a Marxist organisation. But conveniently forget and ignore atrocious human rights records in the host country of the WC. It stinks of hypocrisy. But then what does anyone expect from a bunch of thick footballers who can barely string a sentence together when asked a simple question.
The best thing countries from around the world that qualified for the comp could’ve done is said NO we wont be going. That would put FIFA firmly in its place and it would remind countries like Quatar that their record on how they treat their people is outdated and wrong.
I understand that a number of fans from all the countries are being invited ,with all expenses paid to go to Qatar and sing and chant in happy groups to show what a wonderful spectacle the WC is going to be.Also for that payment they are expected to grass up anybody not being nice or politically incorrect,or heaven forbid critical.
It strikes me that the Qaterie authorities are becoming more apprehensive about the views of football fans as the tournement gets closer. They are aware there is a growing disatisfaction about the whole affair.More injuries are occurring to players having to play such a conjested fixture list and are going to miss what should be the pinnacle of a player's career.
I just wish the whole thing was cancelled and moved elsewhere next summer. But it will never happen.
As a poor pensioner who can barely afford shoelaces, let alone rainbow ones. I shall continue with the free version. My rules - never upgrade when the original product is quite passable. You failed to mention the millions of wonga that changed hands to take us to a hot sandy desert. Probably the same wonga that was shuffled around to get us to Brazil and most of the previous tournaments.
Totally disagree, leave football and anywhere else I want to escape the mental patients alone _ loathe messages even if they are about stuff I agree with.
Mother knows best, listen to mother. No, mother's a bore and I'm trying to watch the Spurs.
Why would you want to politicise any sport? Good luck with darts. No hooliganism or money there so they’ll be left well alone.
Your intersectional’ lens wont bloody work, because half the world’s had a period of enlightenment and the other half think gays want throwing off buildings.
Maybe next time, do stick to the glib comments that add nothing.

Just stop!

While we’re at it it, we should also call an end to making players wear shirts with poppies on.
🤣 and rejoin the European Union?
Keep politics out of football. Ditch the poppies now!
